In the eighteenth century, the German poet Johann Gottfried Herder named Dresden Florence on the elbe, and the historical silhouette now is almost completely restored. Including the palace tower and the dome of the Frauenkirche.
Dilapidated burgher`s houses, villas and apartment blocks are all gradually being restored to their former splendour.
Unfortunately the years since 1990 also have witnessed some architectural blunders, such as oversized department stores and shopping centres in the city centre. These contrast unfavourably with the ambience of the artistic and cultural centre and the strong historical tradition of the city.
More than ever before, Dresden today is a city of museums, galleries, theatres and music. The Dresden Philharmonic and the Dresden Staatskapelle are two orchestras of world renown. Dresden`s historical steamship fleet is a special attraction, with nine ships running excursions to Meißen and to Saxon Switzerland.
The city area was considerably increased again with incorporations of outlying villages and towns from 1997 to 1999. Dresden now has again reached a population of just over half a million.
Every year millions of tourists visit Dresden as a cultural centre and the capital of Saxony, where they are welcomed hospitably.
Now the buildings on the historical Neumarkt around the reconstructed Frauenkirche have been restored, following the original street plan and using original facades and interesting new solutions for interior designs.
The attractive area around Dresden includes the thousand-year old city of Meißen, the birthplace of the state of Saxony, and the romantic Saxon Switzerland with its sandstone cliffs.
